Trails in Val di
Chio
The valley is
crossed by numerous trails easily walked and marked with
special signs. The routes are of various difficulties
divided into 3 types:
Mill route: completely flat along the river
Vingone;
Church & Village route: along the roads;
Castle route: most difficult of the three on top
of the hills that surround the valley.

Mill (Mulino) route - Val di Chio
 |
|
Of considerable historical significance and
environmental landscape, offers the opportunity for
genuine moments of relaxation and fun outdoors away from
sources of pollution and noise. Along the route you can
perform exercises with the free equipment and the help
of the signs. The name is inspired by the many names
that characterize the location and demonstrate the
function of these ancient places such as "Mulino Nuovo",
"Mulino Bianco", "Mulino dello Zoppo", "Mulinacci" etc
etc. |

Castle route (Cai n.50):

The path winds on the top of the hills that form the
watershed between two opposing sides, the name stemming
from the capes used as sighting and check posts. You can
plan daily excursions throughout the ridge, or plan a
shorter and less demanding one. The track, inserted
between the routes of CAI, is noticed with the classic
signs of red and white. Starting from Piazzale Garibaldi
(Board n°1) follow the signs to the CAI route 555 that
leads to the top of Monte Castiglion Maggio passing the
chapel of St.Peter Mammi. It rises quickly, reaching a
maximum of about 760 mt above sea level. On the summit
it crosses the path CAI 555 and following the road on
the right, down to the Passo della Foce, (Board n°11).
At this point you can return to the starting point along
the panoramic road of the Palazzo del Pero n°40,
direction Castiglion Fiorentino, or fall in Val di Chio
in the vicinity of the village of St. Margherita through
the steep road that follows the secondary ridge, or
continue to the Mount Cometa Caldesi, always following
the CAI signs. Continuing the path of the ridge you can
climb all the way to the crest of the mountain from
where you can enjoy the beauty of the Val di Chio, its
castles and its suburbs. Shortly before Caldesi are
indications for Collesecco and St. Cristina. Going
forward, the trail climbs gradually showing the ruined
homes of Mount Cometa where formerly stood the castle of
which today no trace remains. Exceeded the remains of
houses, turn right and follow the signs to the Castle of
Montanina.
